36 Days of Type is a project that invites designers, illustrators and graphic artists to express their particular interpretation of the letters and numbers of the Latin alphabet.

A yearly open call exploring the creative boundaries of letterforms, where participants are challenged to design a letter or number each day for 36 consecutive days, as a global and simultaneous act showing the outcome of the ability to represent the same symbols from thousands different perspectives.

A project that aims to be a space for creation around typography and its endless graphic possibilities.

Our approach

Our approach

Our approach

Our idea for this project was to create vases in the shape of letters and numbers. We asked ourselves what types of vases, what shapes, what colors, what materials and what textures we would like to have in our home.

We wanted to explore several visual styles during these 36 days while keeping a certain aesthetic coherence. The challenge was to keep in mind the idea of product design but using the freedom and playfulness of CGI.

Design projects are eclectic by nature. Therefore we opted to use the intrinsic properties of a cube to represent Pro Helvetia’s initiative and appeal for submissions. Our aim was to be as clear and inclusive as possible to explain the application process to upcoming designers; so we devised a minimalist and geometric visual language. Therefore, we used the cube as a vector of communication to guide potential applicants, as they move from concept to prototype and from production to deployment to various media channels.
